Igniting the American Spirit

In 2010, JA launched a three-year demonstration project thanks to the significant financial support from Adolph Coors Foundation, Anschutz Foundation, Daniels Fund, CenturyLink, Newmont Mining Corporation, Suncor, and Walmart Foundation.

Igniting the American Spirit (Ignite) saturates five low-income feeder systems with classroom programs and enriching capstone experiences like Young Ameritowne, JA Finance Park and JA Business Week. Ignite better prepares volunteers to be successful in the classroom and trains teachers in personal financial literacy through our partnership with Colorado Council for Economic Education.

The 2011/12 school year marked the second year of the project. JA grew programs by 28% to impact 18,155 students within Ignite feeder systems. The improved volunteer training was implemented and teachers are gaining confidence regarding personal financial literacy concepts. Student attitudes and learning are seeing positive change because JA programs help instill upon students the importance of school to be successful in life. Seventy percent of Ignite 7th and 10th grade students planned to attend a 4-year college; a 5% increase from last year.
