Rural education in Colorado is facing significant challenges. A primary concern, as noted in Colorado Governor Hickenlooper’s 2018 State of the State address, is the growing shortage of educators in small rural communities.

New York Life Insurance Company is bolstering education in rural areas through a Community Impact Grant of $20,000 presented to JA specifically to support JA middle school programs in Northern Colorado and Wyoming, with an emphasis on smaller rural communities. While the grant does not specifically address the teacher shortage, it does ensure that existing teachers have the support and resources they need to enrich student experiences and education in financial literacy, entrepreneurship and work readiness skills.

Representatives from New York Life Insurance Company presented a check to JA at Eaton Middle School in Eaton, CO, on March 23. Matt Fries, financial services professional, who also serves on JA’s Northern Colorado/Wyoming Advisory Board, shared a few words about the company’s commitment.

We are pleased that our partnership will have a long-lasting impact on Junior Achievement and rural education in our state.”

By bringing trained volunteers into the classroom, JA helps strengthen and expand student learning and allows professionals from the community to share their knowledge and experience.

Thanks to New York Life’s support, the approximately 480 students at Eaton Middle School experienced hands-on financial literacy programs.

It also means a lot to see corporations supporting educational efforts for smaller communities such as Eaton,” said JA’s Northern Colorado/Wyoming District Director Elizabeth Winn. “We want to ensure that every school, regardless of size, location or socioeconomic status, has access to the amazing resources and programs that JA provides.
