Terry Enright, staff landman with Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, is a veteran JA volunteer. For the past 15 years, Terry has imparted his business acumen and entrepreneurial knowledge to more than 350 students. In 2013, Terry was inducted into the JA Apple Society in recognition for his steadfast commitment to engaging with students multiple times.
As an athletic coach, father to six children, and former business owner, Terry knows the importance of teaching students the entrepreneurial skills they’ll need later in life. Whether he is working with third graders or high school students he sees the benefits in instilling a passion for free enterprise in Colorado students and believes it is invaluable to the future of our country.
Terry has enjoyed teaching many JA programs, but his favorite program is the third grade JA Our City program. “I like Our City and teaching the third graders because the program is very entertaining for the students while they are learning,” said Terry. “It’s easy to interact with the kids while you’re building the city and identifying different zones, how a city works, and tax revenues. It’s a good quality program and that age group is very responsive to the activities.” To compliment the third grade JA curriculum, Anadarko created a set of interactive activities. Terry and other Anadarko volunteers present the activities, which highlight the use of oil and gas in everyday life as well as careers within the energy industry.
Terry teaches the majority of his classes through the traditional JA format, which entails weekly classroom visits, and knows the importance of a strong relationship with his classroom teacher. “The partnership with the teacher is crucial,” explained Terry. “Volunteers need to partner with their teacher to have an interactive and successful classroom.” Therefore, each time Terry concludes his sessions with a small party in the classroom. He loves being able to hand out the certificates of achievement to each student and have a little cake to celebrate!
Hats off to another amazing JA volunteer! Thank you for all you do Terry!
